Swimming with Locs: How to Protect Your Hair from Chlorine and Saltwater

Swimming is a great way to stay active, but for those with locs, exposure to chlorine and saltwater can lead to dryness and damage. Here’s how to keep your locs healthy while enjoying the water.

1. Pre-Wet Your Locs

Before swimming, soak your locs with fresh water. This reduces the amount of chlorine or saltwater your hair absorbs, minimizing dryness.

2. Use a Protective Product

Apply a leave-in conditioner or natural oil (like coconut or jojoba oil) to create a barrier against harsh water chemicals.

3. Wear a Swim Cap

A well-fitted swim cap can protect your locs from excessive water exposure. Choose a larger cap specifically designed for locs or natural hair. There are black owned companies that specifically make bigger swim caps for those with locs and big hair!

4. Rinse Immediately After Swimming

After leaving the pool or ocean, rinse your locs thoroughly with clean water to remove chlorine or salt before they dry into your hair.

5. Wash and Deep Condition Regularly

Use a residue-free shampoo and a deep conditioner after swimming to prevent dryness and buildup.

Side Bar: Air drying is not always the best solution- Insufficient air drying can contribute to mildew, yeast and other issues. It's imperative to blow dry to ensure the interior portion is dry.

Final Thoughts

Swimming doesn’t have to be a challenge when you have locs. By taking these simple precautions, you can protect your hair and enjoy the water stress-free.
